Animal Spirit Guides Totems and Animal Wisdom – How They Can Help Guide You

Is there such a thing as an animal spirit guide, animal totem, or power animal?

And if so, how can they help guide us?

Abraham Lincoln once replied to friends who teased him for delaying them after stopping to return a fledgling, a baby bird, to its nest:

“I could not have slept tonight if I had left that helpless little creature to perish on the ground.”

There is a Life Force in all things.

Lincoln recognized that little bird as a living, breathing being whose life mattered.

Every plant, every animal, every tree, every stone, every person is part of the same living world.

When I picture Abraham Lincoln, as tall as he was, gently bending down to return a tiny baby bird to its nest, I am reminded of one of the many reasons he remains my favorite president.

Throughout history, people all over the world have looked to animals for guidance, wisdom, and inspiration.

Native American tribes, the Mansi of the Ural Mountains, Aboriginal Australians, the Māori of New Zealand, and many other Indigenous peoples have honored the animal world and recognized that animals have much to teach us.

The names and traditions may be different, but the idea is often the same: animals can help guide us, teach us important lessons, and remind us that we are connected to something greater than ourselves.

Today, you may hear people use terms like animal spirit guide, power animal, spirit animal, or totem. Many people use these terms interchangeably, but they don’t always mean the same thing. Depending on the tradition, culture, or spiritual path, each may have a slightly different meaning. What’s important is not so much the label, but the message, wisdom, and guidance the animal brings into your life.

We all live on this beautiful, living world together, sharing the same air, water, and sunshine.

There are countless stories of animals helping one another, even animals from completely different species. We have all seen the videos. A dog caring for orphaned kittens. A cat adopting baby squirrels. An elephant protecting another animal in distress.

Something deep within us responds to those stories because they remind us that compassion is not unique to human beings.

Many cultures believe that long ago, people were able to communicate directly with animals.

Whether that is literally true or simply a teaching passed down through the generations, I think there is wisdom in the idea.

Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped listening.

Perhaps it was the hardening of our hearts.

What is a hardening of heart?

It happens when we become disconnected from the feelings and experiences of other living beings. When we can witness suffering and feel nothing. When we stop seeing animals as fellow travelers on this journey through life and begin seeing them as objects rather than living souls.

Animals are a lot more intelligent and aware than most people give them credit for. Just because they don’t speak our language doesn’t mean they don’t think, feel, love, remember, or grieve.

Anyone who has ever loved an animal already knows this.

Animals form deep bonds with one another. They form deep bonds with us. They remember their babies, their companions, and the people they love. There are countless stories of animals being reunited after years apart and immediately recognizing one another. They don’t forget.

People often say that animals live in the present moment, and they do. But that doesn’t mean they don’t carry memories, emotions, and attachments. They absolutely do.

As an animal communicator, I’ve seen this time and time again. Animals remember kindness. They remember loss. They remember love. They know when someone is missing. They know when someone is hurting. They understand far more than many people realize.

Perhaps that’s one reason so many cultures throughout history have looked to animals as teachers, guides, and messengers. Animals are connected to the natural world in a way that many of us have forgotten. If we’re willing to pay attention, they still have a great deal to teach us.

What’s the Difference Between an Animal Spirit Guide, a Power Animal, and a Totem?

An animal spirit guide is often an animal that appears during a particular period of your life to bring guidance, teach a lesson, or draw your attention to something important.

A power animal is generally thought of as a longer-term companion or ally whose qualities and strengths walk beside you throughout your life.

A totem traditionally referred to an animal connected to a family, clan, or community. This is where the idea of totem poles comes from. Today, many people use the word more broadly, but historically a totem often represented an entire group rather than just one individual.

No matter what term you prefer, animals have long been viewed as teachers, protectors, messengers, and companions on the spiritual path.

An animal spirit guide, much like a spirit guide or angel, chooses us.

It isn’t always the animal we would choose for ourselves.

Sometimes it’s not the majestic eagle or powerful wolf people expect.

Sometimes it’s a rabbit.

Sometimes it’s a frog.

Sometimes it’s a beetle.

Every animal carries its own unique wisdom and perspective.

They often appear when we need them most.

From my own experience, the rabbit has always been a sign of new beginnings. Over the years, whenever a rabbit has unexpectedly appeared in my life, whether sitting quietly by the roadside or showing up in my backyard, it has been followed within days by new opportunities, positive changes, or a fresh direction. It happens so consistently that I can no longer dismiss it as coincidence.

Just the other day, a tiny baby bunny appeared in my backyard. I live in a very densely populated neighborhood, not next to open fields or woods where I would expect to see rabbits regularly. I knew it was for me. The little bunny was facing me, and it immediately caught my attention.

Within two days, new opportunities involving animal communication appeared, and people began reaching out to me for help connecting with their pets. Rabbits have long been associated in many cultures with fertility, abundance, rebirth, and new beginnings, and in my own life, that symbolism has proven true time and time again.

Whenever I see a rabbit, I pay attention, and it makes me feel good because I know something new and positive is about to happen.

If you would like to discover your own animal spirit guide, spend some time in nature. It doesn’t have to be a remote mountaintop or a forest trail. Your own backyard can be enough.

Sit quietly.

Take a few deep breaths.

Become still.

Ask for guidance.

Ask your animal spirit guide, power animal, or animal messenger to make itself known to you.

Then pay attention.

The answer may come through a dream.

A meditation.

A chance encounter.

A repeated appearance.

Or a feeling that simply won’t go away.

When an animal repeatedly appears in your life, don’t be so quick to dismiss it.

Ask yourself:

Why now?

What is happening in my life?

What qualities does this animal possess?

What lesson might it be bringing me?

Sometimes the message isn’t found in the animal itself.

Sometimes the message is found in what that animal awakens within you.

After all, animals are angels, too.

And what is an angel but a messenger from the Divine, sent to guide, comfort, teach, and inspire us?

What messages do the animals have for YOU? ^..^,

Blessings,

Jenny

  1. Thank You Cinn for sooo much information. :)

What started out as a meditation a few months or more back, ended being a journey. I was met by a beautiful female crocodile who journeyed with me to another time. It was a wonderful experience and I have been changed ever since.
